Regional Workshop against Counterfeit Goods held in Philippine

Recently, the World Intellectual Property Organization (the “WIPO”), the U.S. government and the Philippine Intellectual Property Office held a workshop on the Dangers of Counterfeit Goods to Public Health in Mombasa, Kenya, Philippine. Delegates from China, Myanmar, Vietnam, Cambodia, etc over ten countries and regions attended the meeting.

Primary principals of key member agencies of Philippine National Committee on Intellectual Property introduced IPR enforcement within their respective jurisdiction, and said a 2012-2016 Philippine intellectual property protection and enforcement actions have been developed. According to the introduction, to fight against counterfeit and pirated goods, Philippine government should strengthen cooperation between various departments and play a leading role; strengthen the development of intellectual property system and the capacity-building of law enforcement; enhance the level of the trial of IPR cases; improve public education and public awareness and foster intellectual property culture.

According to the responsible WIPO official, the strengthening of intellectual property rights promotion and publicity is an important way to enhance public awareness of the danger of counterfeit goods. It is learned that this workshop is a content of the first Philippine Anti-Counterfeiting and Piracy Summit.
